You'll notice BZ is complaining about "missing anims file", simply click "ok".

So, we will install d3dx9, dsound and vcrun2008:

Third Step: installing native windows DLL's and components to override Wine's onesįirst of all, it's an important step in Wine's configuration, in order to get proper gaming performance, and not only with BattleZone, but for many, many, many games. winetricks will handle them for us, hopefully (and I think we can all thanks alot the winetricks devs for this amazing little piece of software). Here, you can see a part of my dll overrides. This is important, because BZ and randr are not really good friends - you don't want to play BZ fullscreen, lets say in 1440x900 on your 1920x1080 display, and having to restore the correct resolution when back to your desktop can be boring, or even lead to weird behavior. We will launch Battlezone "fullscreen" in this virtual desktop. Put the value you want for your virtual desktop. Choose "Allow Window manager to decorate windows", "Allow WM to manipulate windows", and "Emulate a Virtual Desktop". Here, I choose the Windows XP compatibility mode. Here are some screenshots of my Wine config, to help you figure it out: Note that wine_gecko is not required at all to get BZ running, but can be used by other games (especially launchers) like, let's say, Skyrim or WoW.īecause we will be using winetricks to get all the DLL override stuff, we only have to configure Wine's display. To configure Wine, you'll have to type this command line: : $HOME/bin if you added it in your PATH). Alternatively, you can copy it somewhere in your $PATH (e.g. winetricks in the directory where you downloaded it. To launch it you'll have, once made executable, to type. Important: if winetricks is not available in your distribution's repositories, follow instructions on to grab the latest copy of it. However, BZ shall run with wine 1.4 (which is, normally, the default for "stable" distros) - if anyone have some spare time to test it, it'll be nice.

NOTE: Ubuntu (and, I bet, Mint ones) users can use to add the wine PPA repository, so you can install the latest wine version (1.5.15 at the time of this tutorial writing). Or, alternatively, if you use yaourt: (it'll handle the root authentification) This one should not be really hard, as long as wine is available in your distro's repositories:Ĭode: Select all Archlinux: first, become root, or use sudo: Don't forget to type "exit" once you're doneįirst Step: Installing Wine and winetricks So, when you see a "#", either type sudo command, or log in as root using su. command lines beginning with "$" are to be passed as a standard user (ie, the user you log in each time you power on your computer). Last thing: command lines beginning with "#" are to be passed as root, either by login in as root or using sudo.

Check your distro's documentation/wiki on how to get this done. Others distributions also might have to add a multilib repo as well. Note for arch users: you might have to add the multilib repository in your nf. (I don't have ati/amd stuff, so if anyone here have one, PM me )Īll users, in order to get sound working, install lib32-alsa. Nvidia users: lib32-nvidia-utils (proprietary blob driver)Īti users: depends, if you use radeon/radeonhd or fglrx.

One more important thing, for 64 bits users: as wine (and BZ) are 32 bits softwares, you'll have to install some 32 bits libraries in order to be able to play: Well… let's go! I'll cover Archlinux, Fedora (I'm not a fedora user, so if there is any mistake, PM me) and Debian-based distros (let's say, Ubuntu and Mint).Īnother little disclaimer, to avoid the classical "CLI rants": for the sake of explanation's simplicity, I'll mainly rely on command line: explaining how to use a graphical package manager is not the topic of this tutorial, and CLI is faster in this case: just type. Hi all, as some of you seemed interested in a "running BZ under gnu/linux" tutorial, here it is!įirst, little disclaimer: english is not my mother's tongue, so if you find errors, mistakes, PM me.
